Off the Wall: Lisa Bird
In the PPLD TV video above, botanical artist and illustrator Lisa Bird discusses the craft of drawing Colorado’s native plants. Already a gardener, Bird took an introductory drawing class and realized she had the skills to vividly capture the distinct characteristics of plants. You can view her work at Sand Creek Library in November, Monument Library in December, and Cheyenne Mountain Library in January.

Pikes Peak Library District regularly displays the work of local artists at many of our libraries. For a complete list of November’s exhibits, click here.

Check out the latest tech gear in our Gadget Garage

As technology evolves, so does the manner in which we can enjoy books, music, video games, and more. A multitude of devices are now available and new gadgets emerge constantly. PPLD is committed to keeping on the cutting edge of technology, and also realizes some patrons may not be familiar with, or comfortable using, these devices… many of which can be used to utilize the Library’s resources. Visit our Gadget Garage for a hands-on experience with this ultramodern gear, including an iPad, Kindle, Nook, Sony eReader Touch, Kobo, PSP Go, Archos, and more.

A visit to the Gadget Garage is also a great way to test potential holiday gifts before spending a dime!

Celebration X to support Shivers Fund

The Shivers Celebration, which debuted 18 years ago to raise cultural and arts awareness in Colorado Springs, continues this year on Thursday, November 24 with a five-day celebration of inspirational concerts, art exhibits, and presentations. Most events will be held at the Antlers Hilton (4 S. Cascade Ave.).

The Celebration is a special fundraising event held every other year in Colorado Springs to support the Shivers Fund at Pikes Peak Library District. Peggy and Clarence Shivers established the Fund in 1993 to expand PPLD’s African American collection and promote the arts through concerts and educational opportunities for youth.

Musical performers will include Corliss Taylor-Dunn, John Bowen, Anthony and RaDonna Bell, Michael Howell, and Lila Mori. There will also be a fine arts show, free music workshop for youth, and a film screening. The Celebration will conclude with a Sunday morning worship and brunch, open to the public. This year marks the tenth Celebration event.
