Water 2012: A Community-Wide Effort to
Promote a Celebration of Water
Pikes Peak Library District and Colorado Springs Utilities, along with 12 other organizations in the Pikes Peak region, are partnering in 2012 to raise awareness about water as a valuable and limited resource. For more information about Water 2012, click here. Here are some upcoming events.
Prairie Puzzle with Cheyenne Mountain Zoo: Discover the solution to the prairie puzzle at this fun program. Learn about the amazing animals of the prairie and how they work together to keep the ecosystem strong. Registration is recommended. For ages 7 and up.
Water Wonders: This presentation offers an introduction to the water molecule, water cycle, weather, and water conservation. Students will learn what water is made of and why it’s important. They’ll perform a water cycle experiment, create a cloud in a bottle, and explore how much water we use and can conserve. The program concludes with a brief assessment and take-home information to share with parents. For grades 2 - 5.
Water Wise: From the mountain to the tap, this classroom presentation offers an overview of the supply, collection, treatment, and distribution of water in Colorado Springs. Students help build and map the Colorado Springs’ water supply from as far away as the western slope. An appreciation of water with ways to conserve is reinforced through activities, a self-assessment, and take-home information. For grades 6 - 8.

Civil War Wives Lecture Series
Carol Berkin, author of Civil War Wives: The Lives and Times of Angelina Grimké Weld, Varina Howell Davis, & Julia Dent Grant, will give two lectures covering subjects from her book.
Julia Dent Grant (pictured left) was the model of 19th century domesticity. She believed in that separation of public and domestic spheres that placed her beloved husband in the world of politics, war and breadwinning and sheltered her in the home. As crisis swirled about her, as war divided the nation, and as America moved into modernity, Julia focused her attention on family and friends. Yet her story is an important one, for she represents the majority of the people of her era and our own, who deal with events they cannot control and do not fully understand by measuring their impact on those they loved.

Varina Howell Davis (pictured right) was beautiful, but she was also brilliant, a woman with great intellectual curiosity, a sharp wit, and keen powers of observation of the world around her. Her letters and her memoir offer us remarkable insights into the character of political leaders of the Civil War era as well as vivid accounts of sectional tensions in the antebellum years and the tragedies of the war and its aftermath. Above all, they provide a portrait of a remarkable woman whose independent spirit could never be suppressed.

Call for Teen Art!
Teens: submit your artwork to TArt 2012 for a chance to be displayed at one of our libraries! Your artwork needs to reflect this year’s theme, Out of Context. Take time to look at particulars of the world around you, without context, without explanation. Sometimes we need the shock of seeing things outside their natural setting to really appreciate them. Other times, we need to see ourselves outside of our situation to really understand it. Use your own creativity to shift the boundaries and make something extraordinarily Out of Context.
All jurying will be performed by PPLD’s teen advisory groups. These volunteers advise the Library on how best to serve teens. All entrants must be in grades 6 - 12 in March 2012.
Please drop off your art (adhering to submission guidelines) on March 5 or 6, from 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. at the Carnegie Reading Room in Penrose Library, the East Teen Center at East Library, Ruth Holley Library, or Monument Library.
