Opposing Viewpoints in Context
Opposing Viewpoints in Context is the premier online resource covering today’s hottest social issues, from Offshore Drilling to Climate Change, Health Care to Immigration. This subscription database is free for PPLD cardholders living in our tax district (your card number must start with a 4). It helps people research, analyze, and organize a broad variety of data for conducting research, completing writing assignments, preparing for debates, creating presentations, and more. For more on this database, you can watch the PPLD TV-produced video above.

Speaking of opposing viewpoints, liberal activist Terry Marshall and conservative cartoonist Chuck Asay recently collaborated on a novel entitled Soda Springs: Love, Sex, and Civil Rights. They do agree on one thing: fiction can speak more powerfully to truth than fact. On November 8, they will give a talk that will draw upon the novel and catapult participants into a fresh understanding of a range of perspectives on issues relevant today. Calling All Poets!

Now is the time to submit your original poems to the Pikes Peak Poet Laureate Project for the next Poetry While You Wait poetry booklet. The booklet will be distributed to waiting areas all over the Pikes Peak region, such as doctors’ offices, beauty salons, and auto repair shops. This year, poems will be considered in English and foreign languages. If you wish to submit your poems in a foreign language, include your original foreign language poem and its English translation. All forms (free verse, blank verse, etc.) will be considered for publication.

You may submit up to five poems, 30 lines or shorter and suitable for public consumption, in the body of one email (not an attachment) to poet@pikespeakpoetlaureate.org. You can also mail your submission to: Jim Ciletti, Poet Laureate, 1215 N. Union Blvd., Colorado Springs, CO 80909. Deadline is December 1, 2011. Please include your postal address, email, phone number, and a one-line bio with your submission. Poetry While You Wait will be published in spring. For more information, contact Jim Ciletti at 634-2367.

Donate to Give!, Help Adult Literacy and ESL

Give! is the Colorado Springs Independent's year-end multimedia and guerilla marketing campaign designed to generate funds, volunteers, and applause for the important work local nonprofits perform. This year, the program’s steering committee has selected 49 non-profits to be part of the 2011 Give! campaign. The Pikes Peak Library District Foundation is fortunate to be among these organizations. All funds received by the Foundation from Give! will go to fund PPLD’s Adult Literacy and ESL program. To donate, visit indygive.com and click on Make a Donation. You will find PPLD under the Community Building category.

PPLD’s Adult Literacy and ESL program offers free tutoring and English language learning for adults. Using trained volunteers, the program provides a friendly and helpful environment for people who are just learning English, as well as those native English speakers who need to improve their reading, writing, and comprehension skills. Participants can choose from a variety of programs in which they can practice reading and writing with a group, or get individual guidance from a tutor, and more.
